What is yoga?
Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice that originated in India. The word Yoga is often translated as meaning Union, and can be thought of as a means to integrate the various aspects of the Self. While it can be accurately described as a philosophy, yoga is not a religion. It does not aim to teach any particular set of beliefs or dogma, but rather bestows clarity so we can more easily and authentically connect with our true nature.
Do I need my own mat?
Depending on the studio, you may borrow or rent a mat. Investing in a personal mat is advisable, though not required.
What should I wear to class?
Wear workout-type clothes. Avoid anything that is extremely tight or extremely baggy, as this might restrict movement.
What should I bring to class?
Water, a towel, and an open mind.
I’m not very flexible. Can I still do yoga?
Yes, yes, yes!!!!! Yoga is not just for the naturally flexible. Variations are offered in class to allow students of all levels of strength and flexibility to grow their practice.
I heard you can't eat two hours before yoga class. But my metabolism is fast, and my blood sugar plummets if I don’t eat often enough.
Listen to your body, and use common sense. A light snack before class is OK, but coming to yoga straight from a large meal will not serve you well.
What is the Community Class all about?
The intention behind the Community Class is to increase access to yoga to those who find studio classes to be financially prohibitive. If money does not flow easily in your world, feel free to bring any kind of creative trade (such as something you baked, a mix CD or craft of some kind, or anything else that feels appropriate). Do not feel required to come up with a special barter if it does not seem natural for you; cash donations of any amount are always gratefully accepted.
